Just ~posterior~ to each |occipital condyle| is a small depression, called the condylar |fossa|. This |fossa| may feature a ~posterior~ condyloid ~foramen~, an opening in the |fossa|, though this is a variable feature in the human anatomy, possibly nonexistent on one or both sides. Within the condylar |fossa| is the condylar canal, which pierces the |occipital bone| just beneath the ~condyles~.
